Jefferson Parish Lakeshore Library

Metairie, LA

The Lakeshore Library replaces an existing branch badly damaged by Hurricane Katrina. The new one-story, 7700 SF state-of-the-art branch library has a renewed focus on providing children's services and materials. It has been designed for maximum flexibility to accommodate future planning needs. Reading/stack areas are open (free-span without columns) with maximum natural light from large north-facing windows. Expanded computer areas and digital resources will be available for children, teens and adults, including WiFi internet and laptop support. Mobile furniture, service kiosks, and shelving will be utilized. Varied ceiling/wall treatments, ceiling heights will identify separate areas for adult, teen and children - giving each a distinct character. Visual focus will be on the children's area with clerestory windows, suspended art, and wall murals. Ample area will be available for children's' programming and story-telling. In keeping with the Library Director's desire that the building "symbolize both the rebirth of the neighborhood and a commitment by the parish and its residents to the conservation and recycling of resources", the new library will incorporate several sustainable design features - including use of "green" recyclable building and finish materials, energy-efficient building systems/controls, combination indirect lighting/natural daylight. The library also contains a multi-function meeting room which can be utilized by the community after hours as well as children's functions during the day.
